Semaglutide (brand names Wegovy or Ozempic), is an FDA-approved medication for adult weight management. It is the first drug of its kind approved for this purpose. Semaglutide mimics a hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), which regulates food intake and appetite. Clients can expect the medical provider to increase their medication dose gradually over 16-20 weeks. The average weight loss is 15% of one’s body weight. Committing to at least 3 months of treatment is imperative to see the best results. Injections are done weekly under the skin, and we will monitor your progress. Regular clinic visits are expected as part of your treatment plan.

Semaglutide is a medication commonly used to treat type 2 diabetes. It belongs to the glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists. Recently, the FDA approved a higher dose of Semaglutide as a treatment for obesity. It has been shown to be effective in aiding weight loss in overweight and obese individuals when combined with diet and exercise.

It is well tolerated overall. However, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramping, and constipation are common.
Nausea is the most common side effect, we can discuss ways to decrease this symptom.
It is an injection given once weekly by subcutaneous route. Doses are increased every 4 weeks as tolerated for weight loss.
Semaglutide is a prescription medication taken once a week via injection for weight loss in adults who have obesity or are overweight and have at least one weight-related health problem. Each person is different but it may take 2 -4 weeks to notice any weight loss. It is recommended to continue treatment for at least 3 - 4 months to evaluate its effectiveness. The effects of the Semaglutide will vary and may depend on factors such diet and exercise habits.
- Adult patients with an initial body mass index (BMI) of 30 or greater (obesity), or
- Adult patients with a BMI of 27 or greater (overweight) in the presence of at least one weight-related co-morbid condition (e.g., hypertension, type 2 diabetes mellitus, hyperlipidemia)
You CANNOT take Semaglutide if you have any of the following conditions:
- Personal or family history of Medullary Thyroid Carcinoma (MTC)
- Personal or family history of Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia, type 2 (MEN 2)
- Prior allergic reaction to Semaglutide or to any of its ingredients* (serious allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis and angioedema, have been reported with Semaglutide)
- Personal history of pancreatitis
- Diabetic retinopathy (diabetic eye disease)
- Pregnant or trying to get pregnant
- Breast-feeding (Semaglutide is present in breast milk)
- Less than 18 years old
- Depression with a history of suicidal thoughts
- Renal impairment or end stage renal disease
